Staying in the Word When Your Routine Changes

by Elder Stephanie Bridgeford

Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.”

The GPS (God’s Powerful Scriptures) had me rerouting my daily routine so I could stay in the Word. On October 25, 2020, our fourth grandchild was born; and Miracle Shawne Nicole is her name. When she was born, she had to be hospitalized because she was considered premature. Nine days later, on November 3, 2020, it was Election Day. After our family had gone to vote that morning, I went to visit Miracle at the hospital. That same afternoon, I received a call that our kitchen caught fire and that my husband and two daughters escaped unharmed. When I came home after the visit and saw the sight of the horribly damaged kitchen, I said nothing.

That evening, we gathered our thoughts, thanked God for his protection and did what we needed to do to rebuild. During this period, our family temporarily lived in a hotel for four months. Little did we know that, while living in a hotel due to the house fire, our entire family, including the baby, would end up catching COVID 19.

Fast-forward to September 2021, my husband was still required to be on oxygen 24 hours a day. The baby is walking; and we have had deaths of many beloved family members and friends. Nevertheless, during this season, we are still standing strong. The GPS (God’s Powerful Scriptures) is what kept me through it all. Equally important, what I did daily, helped me trust God when crisis after crisis came at us.

I listened to the scriptures on YouTube, Facebook and Zoom. I watched motivational speakers and prayed with prayer groups. I stayed connected to my family. There were times when I cried out to God with all my heart, I asked for forgiveness when I messed up and called prayer warriors for prayer when I needed help. When my body was tired I slept. COVID 19 had weakened my body drastically. I tried to force myself to drink plenty of water; and although I had no appetite, I forced myself to eat and drink nutritional beverages.

Reaching out to my leadership and letting them know I needed to reroute my activities of daily living was also important.  Many times I would lay in the bed with tears running down my face whispering to God this short prayer request, “Help us Father.”

During this season, I know it is trusting in God’s Powerful Scriptures. It was that daily GPS that kept me going. Everyday I would wake up thanking God for the doors of life He’s opened, listening to comforting songs, motivational speakers, television shows that make me laugh and force myself to speak life and think positive. I pray, even if it is not a long prayer. I make myself think on things that are good, lovable, and praiseworthy. If I am tired, I rest.

Most importantly, I remained honest with God and asked Him to help me to “never“ give up or go back. I then reminded Him of His powerful promises. Finally, if I had to, I would reroute my daily schedule, focusing on the things that are most important.

God’s Word has helped me stand all along this tumultuous journey. During those moments when I am weak, He makes me strong. I totally trust in the Lord with my whole heart and I’m not leaning on my own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledge God and He directs my paths.

Everyone will have situations and circumstances happen that’s out of their control, which will cause their normal routine to be rerouted. The only way you can be ready to handle these unforeseen issues, is to daily use the GPS (God’s Powerful Scriptures). He knows what’s going to happen before it happens. He knows how it’s going to affect you and your family. As we keep ourselves watered with the Word of God, when the storms of life come to shake us, we will be absolute and strong because with God, nothing shall be impossible.

  1. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much
about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog.
A great read. I will certainly be back.
