Everyday Is A Good Day for Prayer

by Minister Antoinette Derrickson

Spending daily time in prayer is crucial to our relationship with the Lord.

“In the morning Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”
–Psalm 5:3

There is no better way to start off our day than in communion with God.  First thanking Him for His love, mercy, and grace, for sustaining us through the night, and for waking us up each morning.  Prayer sets the tone for our day, and praying first thing in the morning it helps us to set our mind on Christ and giving the day to Him.  Prayer directs our thoughts and heart to God.  When Jesus taught his disciples how to pray, he included this: “give us this day our daily bread”.  When we ask God for our daily bread, we are acknowledging our dependence on Him.  Today’s prayer should not sustain us for a week or up to tomorrow, or only when things are going bad; we are expected to pray without ceasing(1 Thess. 5:17) and the best way to do that is by making prayer a daily practice.

For me, praying daily is a necessity; just like we wouldn’t think of leaving home without our wallet/purse or cell phone, we should not leave home without first covering ourselves and our family in prayer.  When we pray daily, we give God control over our lives and enable him to protect us and fight battles on our behalf, as we have an advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1).  We also allow God to guide us so that we can walk in the ways that are pleasing to Him. And our prayer lives are not just about us, our problems, and our wants – we’re encouraged to pray on behalf of others.  With all the turmoil going on in the world today (plagues, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, wars, homelessness, depression, murders, suicide – the list goes on), daily prayer is definitely important (Ephesians 6:18).

When we give our lives to Christ and start walking in the purposes of God, we become Satan’s target.  Therefore, we need to be vigilant because he walks around like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8).  That is why the Bible encourages us to devote ourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful (Colossians 4:2).  Through prayer, God strengthens us so that we can withstand the wiles of the enemy; he also reveals the enemy’s plans and shows us how to avoid or overcome them and live a victorious life every day!

“The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying.  He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, and prayerless religion.  He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray.” -Samuel Chadwick
